Fir Trees

Fir Trees

Fir trees are native to the higher altitudes in cold and temperate climates. Fir trees resemble the spruce trees. Fir trees are monoecious ( this means that they have both male and female flowers on the same tree ) Fir trees don’t care much for pollution, so if you live around a bigger city, fir trees are not your best option.

The fir tree needles are around 2 to 3 inches in length and tend to be flatter than those of the spruce tree. On the underside of a fir tree needle there are two white bands, the fir tree needle lives for about 4 to 5 years before dropping. When the fir tree needle is crushed it creates a lemony scent. Flowers appear in the spring with the male catkins on side shoots and the female flower closer to the tip. The cones will mature sometime in the summer; they can change colors quite a bit. The cones on fir trees stand up on the branch instead of hanging on the underside. But as soon as the fir tree cone is ripe, and full of seeds it will fall of the tree.

Fir trees prefer good soil, they do best in acidic-based soil and should live in places that have a high rainfall and the soils stay moist. Smaller fir trees would benefit from good mulch, especially in areas that have long, hot and drier summers. Pruning if needed, should be done in the spring.
