Hibiscus Flower

The hibiscus is a flower that is native to warm temperate, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world. The hibiscus plant can be both an annual and a perennial. Hibiscus's can also grow to be woody shrubs and trees also. The flower of a hibiscus is a large conspicuous trumpet shape that has 5 or more petals on it. The hibiscus plant grows in a range of different colors. See the above links for the different colors of the hibiscus plant. The fruit of a hibiscus is a five-lobed capsule that contains several seed in each of their lobes. The hibiscus releases them when the capsule splits and then opens at maturity.

Just like any other flower, the hibiscus has many different kinds in their family. Some of these different styles of hibiscuses are symbols for different states and countries. The "Rose of Sharon" is the national flower for South Korea, and the Ma'o hau hele is that state flower for Hawaii.

The most common hibiscus grown in gardens is known as the "Rose of Althea", better known as the "Rose of Sharon". In the warmer region the Chinese hibiscus is the more popular breed.

Hibiscus leaves are used to help in making different herbal teas. Most of the time they are mixed with the rosehip.

The Polynesians use the fibers of the hibiscus plant to make and create their grass skirts. This is because the bark of the hibiscus plant contains strong fibers.
