Spruce Trees

Spruce Trees

Spruce trees tend to be very large coniferous trees when they mature. Spruce trees are easily distinguishable from other coniferous evergreen trees. This is because a spruce tree has whorled branches and a conical form to it. The needles of a spruce tree are attached singly to the branches in a spiral way. The spruce tree sheds its needles, when the needles are between 4 and 10 years old. Spruce trees can handle the extreme cold temperatures of the northern or far southern regions of the globe. A little reminder with spruce tree is what you trim will not grow back.

Spruce trees wood is used for paper manufacturing, this is because the wood fibers are long and will bind together to make a strong paper. The spruce tree wood is also used for construction and also used to create wooden aircraft and stringed musical instruments.

Spruce trees are popular ornamental trees, admired because it remains green even in the brisk cold winter months, but in some of the spruce trees, they tend to create a greenish blue color. This is the reason spruce trees are used as Christmas trees.

The leaves and branches, and the oils of a spruce tree can be used to brew spruce beer.

Native Americans in eastern North America once used the roots of some of the different species of spruce trees, to weave baskets and sew together pieces of birch bark to create canoes.

Spruce tree needles can directly ingested or boiled into a tea. This helps replace large amounts of vitamin C.
