How To Build A 3 Tier Strawberry Patch
Items you will need to complete the project.
1. The 3 Tier Strawberry Patch and plants. Purchase here or see below.
2. Depending on where you putting the patch, will determine the amount of top soil you will need. I needed about 4 yards, I put the patch where an old tree was removed from.
3. Last 1 to 1 1/2 yards of your choice of rock or mulch, that will be used as a border.
The 3 Tier Strawberry Patch is very easy to install, if you purchased the kit. From us or another retailer.
1st -- Place about 6 inches of top soil in a circle like format, big enough for the bottom tier to fit on. Once you believe you have enough, place the circular edging like material into the top soil you just put down. The edging should be buried in the top soil from 1/2 to 3/4 of the way deep. Remember the top soil will settle over time, so make sure that you have enough for this. Once you have the first section in place, time to do the same thing only on a small scale for the middle section and then the top tier, just remember it will just be smaller.
2nd -- Once the entire tier appears to be in place correctly. Make sure you have some top soil on the outside of the bottom tier, just to keep it in place. ( It will be buried by stone ) Then in the package you will receive a hose spiget., this will be place under the outside portion of the bottom tier and manuverured up the top soil to sit directly in the middle of the smallest top tier section. HINT ( The straighter it is now, the more evenly your strawberries will be watered in the future.
3rd -- Now it is time to start planting your 50 strawberry plants. To help you plant the correctly, is if you look at one of your plants, it almost seems like there are 2 separate sections to the plants, the roots and the leaves. Plant this strawberry plant into the top soil, just enough that the soil will only cover the very bottom portion the lower half. You will know you put them in correctly is they stand on their own without having any of the stems buried. Helpful Hint -- I planted 30 in the bottom tier, 13 in the middle tier and 7 in the top tier. This made it appear to me, that the strawberry plants were evenly spread through out the 3 tier strawberry patch.
4th -- Time to spread the rock or mulch what ever you considered to be placed outside of your 3 tier strawberry patch. Preferance is rock, because your strawberry plants will grow rhizomes, this is the connector from the main plant, to reproduce other strawberry plants. Just to prove how quick they grow, I planted the strawberry plants in April, by June they were getting long and I probably doubled my number plants. One thing I learned that I will mention because it will take a headache out of your life, don't just plant grass seed around your 3 tier strawberry patch because the rhizomes will grow new plants in your grass. This is the purpose of the rock and/or mulch around the outside of the big tier.
5th -- Lastly, place the rock or mulch around the outside of your patch, this has two purposes, 1. keeps the strawberries from producing new plants outside of your patch and also keeps your outside lower tier intact.
Helpful hint -- All of your fruit that your strawberries produce in the first year should be picked early in the production because this will allow your strawberry plants to grow to full potential and your 2nd year crop will be plentiful, that is of course if you did everything correctly.
