Elm Trees

Elms

Elm trees are tough plants, they can handle very wet climates and they also can handle the driest and dustiest of climates. Elm trees can also handle the extreme differences in the acidity and the alkalinity of the soil they grow in. Elm trees can also hand the wind and the pollution of a big city. This making the Elm tree one of the most diverse trees around. the Elm Tree has only onw drawback to it, and that is the deadly Dutch Elms Disease. This plaque, on the Elm trees, has eliminated entire cities and forests of Elm trees. The devastation started in Europe and in America, sometime in the 1970's.

The Dutch Elms disease only attacks the adult version of the elm tree, so the downside is when a juvenile tree reaches the right age, the disease just takes over and kills it. Part of the reason that the Dutch Elms Disease has spread so readily, is the Elm tree is grown from sucks of another Elm tree and not grown for it's own seed.

Today, there are nurseries that are growing a hybrid form of the Elm tree. This tree is resistant to the Dutch Elms Disease and will also grow around 5 feet a year. We have found a company that has one. Please see the link on the bottom of the page for the Hybrid Elm Tree.

Elm trees have rough and textured leaves with serrated and toothed edges. Some of the species of Elm trees have a thicket of stems at the trunk of the tree. While other Elm trees grow sucks further out from the root system.
