This is one gorgeous vine plant. The fast past and vigorous growth pattern can give you one heck of a spectacular display of lavender and sometimes pinkish flowers. Clematis vines are perennial. This is a plant that can be deciduous or in warm climates be evergreen. If you give you clematis room to grow, you will be very happy that you planted this vine in your yard.
If you’re not too concerned on where your clematis grows, a perfect item to put around your clematis plant is chicken wire. Your clematis plant will adhere itself to the chicken wire and just take off. Clematis plants are very independent. One item I figured was important to mention here is, don’t plant other flowers or plants, that you don’t want to be choked off by the clematis vine, in range of about 2 feet from the base of a clematis plant. Unless you are avid and direct your clematis in the right direction, the clematis vine will attach itself to your other plants and trees.
During the growing season, keep the soil cool and moist with a good cover of mulch. Approximately 2 – 3 inches in depth. Clematis vines grow best if in partial shade. Clematis like moist, well drained, and slightly alkaline to neutral soil.
Now there are many ways to prepare your clematis vines. If your climate tends to get cold in the winter with most of your winters having snow covered ground. Rule of thumb is to cut back the vine to approximately 6 inches from the ground and cover with shredded bark, hay or pruned pine tree branches. Also clematis vines produce flowers every year, but they produce full spectrum of flowers every 2 years. So if you had a full array of flowers last year, this year you will probably have just a small showing.
